POST-DOC dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche collaboratif entre le CHU de Rennes et l’équipe Hybrid Inria

Title: Novel Medical Reeducation Approaches in intensive care units based on Virtual Reality and Multi-Sensory Feedback

Project (Short presentation):

Among patients hospitalized in intensive care units, about 50% of them will suffer from critical illness neuromyopathy (i.e. a neurological and muscular disorder due to immobilization and drugs used at the acute phase of the care) that will delay and sometimes prevent their return to walking. This affection will lead to a major loss of autonomy in their daily life activities, and an increase of their length of stay at hospital. The recent international literature is in favor of early rehabilitation of patients hospitalized in intensive care units. However, both the medical constraints and the low number of rehabilitation staff available in the intensive care units severely limit the possibilities of early intensive rehabilitation. Virtual Reality tools, through observation of action, motor imagery and movement illusion, have already shown their effectiveness in recovering and improving walking in different populations, particularly after a stroke. The objective of this post-doctoral fellowship is therefore the conception of novel Virtual Reality-based systems coupled with motor input capture systems and multimodal feedback systems (especially visual and haptics) adapted to this population. The work program includes both the design of innovative VR interfaces as well as their evaluation with patients within clinical trials conducted at the Rennes University Hospital.
